LANGUAGE - English POLITICS - The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a territory of the British Commonwealth. POPULATION - The total combined population of the 36 islands that make up the BVI is 17,400. The population on Virgin Gorda is about 2,500. THE PEOPLE - Most of the population is of African descent. However, with the growing tourist business, the percentage of Europeans, North Americans and other West Indians is increasing. INDUSTRY - Tourism dominates the island economy.
