Getting Around
There is no public transportation available to the residential areas on St. John, so a rental vehicle is strongly recommended if you want to get around. Given the rough terrain, four-wheel drive vehicles are very popular. Remember driving is on the left. Staying left with the steering wheel on the left side (same as the U. S. mainland) in combination with twisting rough mountain roads, driving (and riding) is very challenging.
TAXI AND BUS - Taxis and open air buses are available in Cruz Bay to the popular beaches. Negotiate your fare in advance. Taxis congregate in the square opposite the ferry dock.
FERRY SERVICE - Most residents and visitors travel to and from St. Thomas on the frequent ferries that travel from Red Hook (ST) to Cruz Bay (SJ). The earliest ferry to Cruz Bay leaves Red Hook at 6:30 a.m. weekdays, then on the hour. There is also regular ferry service back to St. Thomas if St. John gets too quiet for you. Ferries depart Cruz Bay on the hour from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. But if you really want to get away, there are ferries to the British Virgin Islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda. A cool beverage helps beat the tropical heat!
