Barbados Activities
Some things you will want to see if you can:
Mount Gay Distillery, St. Lucy - tours are available Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
St. Nicholas Abbey, St. Peter - This grand residence was never really an abbey. It dates from the 1650's and it is furnished from that period.
Cherry Tree Hill, St. Andrew - The views here are simply spectacular.
Morgan Lewis Mill, St. Andrew - Stop here to view the last remaining intact sugar mill on Barbados. The sugar mills were powered by the steady tradewinds.
Barbados Wildlife Reserve, Farley Hill, St. Peter - Creatures from around the Caribbean and the world wander the 4 acres that make up this reserve. The reserve was established to provide a sanctuary for green monkeys.
Chalky Mount Potteries, St. Andrew - The village of Chalky Mount has been known for its pottery for generations. You can purchase a sample of this 300-year old tradition.
Mount Hillaby, St. Andrew - This highest point on the island is 1,100 feet above sea level.
Harrison's Cave, St. Thomas - Showcasing Barbados' limestone coral geology, a train tour winds through caves complete with pools, waterfalls, and stalagmites.
Sam Lord's Castle - While not really a castle, this splendid home was built by the notorious Sam Lord and is wonderfully decorated with period antiques. The Castle is now the centerpiece of the Marriott Sam Lord's Resort.
Animal Flower Cave - Twenty-seven stone steps lead down into this cavern. Sea anemones grow in the pools on the cavern floor.
Barbados Museum - This museum, located in a former military prison, informs visitors about Barbados, its history and its ecology.
Underwater Exploration - You can dive and snorkel without getting wet in a semi-submersible Seatrec cruise. Through observation windows 6 feet underwater, passengers can view tropical reefs. An Atlantic submarine takes passengers down to 150 feet below sea level for even closer views of reefs and shipwrecks · The list of other "must see" spots is long. Here are a few: Sharon Moravian Church, St. Thomas; Cotton Tower, St. Joseph; Villa Nova, St. John; Codrington College, St. John; St. John's Parish Church; Gun Hill Signal Station, St. George; St. George's Parish Church, University of the West Indies, The Military Museum, Government House, Ilaro Court, Christ Church Parish Church, Sunbury House and Museum, The Aquatic Centre and the Harry Bayley Observatory. There are many ground tour operators on the island. The National Trust maintains many historic sites and offers tours and hikes. Check with the Tourist Board for more information.
